Biblical and Theological Resources: Research & Writing Style

A Guide to Commentaries, Exegesis Resources and BibleWorks 10

Introduction to Theological Terms

One of the biggest academic adjustments new seminarians have to make is getting use to theological terms used in academia.  It is my strongest recommendation that you get a copy of the following book and keep it with you while going to class.

Writing Style

These are recommended to those who wish to improve their writing skills.

Theological Research

On some level, everyone engages in research.  For some, it has been a while since they have engaged in academic research.  These resources are to help the student brush up on research skills needed for seminary work.

Citation Resources

It is important that you ask your professor what citation style he or she wishes you to use.  Typically, Turabian is the choice.  In Biblical studies, SBL style is usually preferred.  Always check with your professor.

Plagarism Reminder

Plagiarism occurs when a person represents someone else's words, ideas, phrases, sentences, or data as one's own work. When a student submits work that includes such material, the source of that information must be acknowledged through complete, accurate, and specific footnote references; verbatim statements must be acknowledged through quotation marks.

To avoid a charge of plagiarism, a student should be sure to include an acknowledgment of indebtedness:

  • Whenever he or she quotes another person's words directly
  • Whenever he or she uses another person's ideas, opinions, or theories, even if they have been completely paraphrased in one's own words
  • Whenever he or she uses facts, statistics, or other illustrative material taken from a source, unless the information is common knowledge.

Best way to avoid plagarizing:

  • Plan ahead and make sure their is ample time to conduct research
  • When in doubt cite the source
