Highly Recommended Online Writing and Research Aides

St. Mary's Seminary and University Guide to Academic Writing --

A wonderful resource that covers common types of writing tasks and effective writing skills. It also covers how to use the Chicago style of documentation. This is one of the best online resources I have seen.

Grammarly --

This is one of the best grammar-checking programs out there and is great for those that need to improve writing skills. Once a text is either downloaded or cut and pasted in, grammarly will automatically check sentence structure, vocabulary, punctuation, spelling, and clarity of writing. In addition, Grammarly will give options on how to fix or improve the highlighted passage. Grammarly gives several choices on the desired level of writing, one of which is academic. It is a free program for basic writing analysis and $30 a month (depending) for more premium benefits. This is an impressive program.

Here is a resource that Dr. John Carroll compiled with major help from Maria Ramos, Professor of English at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in Richmond. This is from the Program for Excellence in Teaching & Learning (PETAL) course and can be found on UPSem Blackboard and needs an UPSem sign-in to access. This is an excellent resource to help the students learn how to read well and to write well. It goes into greater detail than the "Resources and Tips on Writing Well in Seminary."
