Orientation : Drinking from the Fire Hose

Welcome to the Seminary. The Library is here to help!

General Welcome to the IRC

The  Instructional Resource Center (IRC) houses a substantial variety of audio-visual and print teaching materials and curricula. The contents of the IRC are fully integrated into the Library's online catalog so that patrons searching for books on a particular subject are alerted to available media on that subject as well. The IRC also provides a small collection of laptops, cameras, and other digital devices available to current students, faculty and staff members to borrow.
In effect, the IRC incorporates six broad collections and services:

  1. Research Skills and Technology Instruction
  2. Reigner Recording Library and Audiovisual DVD and CD materials
  3. Streaming audiovisual resources. including audiobooks, videos, and music
  4. Christian Education Curricular Resources (available in Richmond only)
  5. Smithy Makerspace in Richmond, and the incipient Charlotte Smithy
  6. Children's, teens, and graphical literature

Selection of materials for the Instructional Resource Center is a cooperative effort between the Director of the Instructional Resource Center, faculty, students and community patrons. As with the General Collection, patron suggestions for purchase are taken  seriously and the Library staff seeks to fill those requests that meet overall collection needs. Particular attention is given to faculty requests for items that are intended for use in specific courses. The IRC Director is responsible for maintaining the integrity and strength of the IRC collection so it is typically the IRC Director who determines what will be selected.

Accessing the IRC

Generally speaking, the IRC physical collections are open during Library hours. However, most of the Makerspace and other services are only available when the IRC is staffed. In general, that is on weekdays from Library opening until 5, and otherwise by special appointment. Please contact Dora with questions, and scan the workshop sessions being offered in Charlotte and in Richmond during this upcoming semester.
